Field Training Coordinator at Northwest Youth Corps Headquarters in Eugene, OR

Northwest Youth Corps (NYC), a non-profit organization, is seeking a Field Training  Coordinator. This position is based in Eugene, Oregon and requires travel to remote training and project locations within Oregon, Washington and Idaho The annual starting salary is $37,000. Organizational background

Since 1984, Northwest Youth Corps (NYC), a non-profit organization, has given tens of thousands of youth and young adults opportunities to learn, grow, and experience success. Through partnerships with conservation agencies, youth and young adults gain the personal and professional skills needed to carry out a variety of stewardship projects, from which they can earn a paycheck, high school credit, and/or an AmeriCorps educational award. More importantly, these young people gain skills needed to become economically and socially self-sufficient, benefit their communities as citizen stewards, and recognize that they can make a positive difference. NYC also operates an accredited charter school, internship program, and the Idaho Conservation Corps (ICC).

Position Summary

The Field Training Coordinator position provides continuity and consistency across NYC’s programming. The position helps establish expectations around the approach, standards, tone and pace of NYC’s programs. While the Field Training Coordinator will work with others in the delivery of specific training, the position is charged with ensuring consistent messaging, particularly around organizational procedures, policies, and risk management.
This position helps establish NYC/ICC’s unique culture with leaders and members and works to set expectations. The Trainer will spend significant time in implementing field-based trainings March through September. In addition, the Coordinator will help support projects that require a level of technical expertise beyond the training level of our staff/crews to implement. It is expected that 50% of this position is field-based, meaning significant periods of time spent living/camping in remote areas. During the summer months this in-field percentage may rise to 65-75%.

• Provide mentoring and training for field staff in application of DEI principles.

Department Supervision and collaboration

• This position is supervised by the Risk Management and Field Training Officer.
• Collaborates with Program Coordinators and Woods Bosses to plan, schedule and implement effective trainings.
• Develops, supports, and evaluates the knowledge and leadership skills of all trainees.
• Communicates with Program Coordinators about strengths and weaknesses of staff participating in trainings.
• The Coordinator will work with Programs Coordinators, Risk Management and Training Officer to identify and prioritize projects in need of additional assistance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify appropriate training locations to meet the needs of the training schedule.
• Work methodically with the Risk Management and Field Training Officer to update and modernize NYC’s training curriculum and schedule to maximize training outcomes.
• Create training goals for each individual training session.
• Create informal and formal goals for each leader participant during their training sessions.
• Facilitate trainings and provide project support with a Leadership first mentality.
• Maintain a strong desire to learn and grow skills and expertise.
• The Program Department is a highly collaborative environment in which the Field Training Coordinator may be assigned projects that support other department goals as needed.

Experience and Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to inspire others
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history in accordance to policy.
• Wilderness medical training and CPR – WFR/WEMT strongly preferred.
• Experience and demonstrated skill at staff evaluation and management, public speaking, organization of field trainings, reporting and editing are highly desirable.
• Ability to effectively teach across multiple learning styles.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Chainsaw and/or Crosscut Saw certification/experience at, or equivalent to USDA-US Forest Service “B” Bucking or more advanced certification (with desire to grow skills and certification levels).
• A minimum of two years of staff supervisory experience required, preferably within the Conservation Corps industry.
• A minimum of two years of experience working in Conservation Corps or Trail Crew environments with demonstrated technical skills and ability to teach advanced trail work skills, saw operations, fuels reduction, and invasive species removal or comparable experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

• In the performance of the job duties, the employee will work in a variety of environments from an office setting to remote locations in the wilderness. In the outdoor environment weather can be extremely hot or cold, wet or dry and vary within a single day. While working outdoors, employee will often camp and sleep outdoors. They will travel over uneven terrain on foot and may hike up to 15 miles a day.
• The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud. PPE is provided and use is required.
• The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodation).

Terms of Employment

Based in Eugene, will require travel to remote training and project locations which may include travelling within OR, WA, and ID. This is a full time, exempt position. Typical office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00 PM; Field schedule will differ with frequent long days and/or evening and weekend responsibilities seasonally.
