Lead half and full day glacier hikes and alpine hikes
We are searching for guides to lead our half and full-day glacier hikes as well as occasional alpine hikes. Most days, hiking guides will be leading 5-8 hour hikes on the Root Glacier which is about 2 miles from our office in Kennecott. This is a non-technical hike (no ropes are required) and we will teach you the glacier skills needed for the position. Guides are responsible for picking up clients at their lodging, fitting them with crampons and other gear, teaching them about the human and natural history of the area during the hike, demonstrating crampon technique, and monitoring safety throughout the day.
Applicants do not need to have previous guiding or glacier experience but must have:
- significant personal experience in the outdoors and a desire to learn more
- a friendly and professional attitude
- interpretive and teaching skills
- public speaking and group management skills
- First Aid/CPR certification is required, Wilderness Advanced First Aid or First Responder is preferred

About, Location & Living:
St. Elias Alpine Guides is located in the heart of the largest National Park in the United States, Wrangell – St. Elias National Park. Our staff currently numbers approximately 45 outdoor professionals dedicated to giving our customers the ultimate outdoor experience. Guides, Interns, and Office Team Members live together at our rustic compound, centered around the historic Motherlode Powerhouse, in McCarthy, AK. This basic housing is provided by the company and all employees take part in a variety of duties and chores unique to living and operating in an off-the-grid, Alaskan bush community. Being so remote (8hr drive from Anchorage), we provide logistical support to our employees such as food delivery and transportation at the start and end of the season.
For our 2021 season, St. Elias Alpine Guides will be leading trips starting May 29th and ending September 12th. Training will start in the second half of May and all new employees are required to attend. At the end of the season, there is a week or so of Closing Chores that all employees participate in to winterize the compound before departing. There may be some flexibility for different start or end dates and will need to be discussed ahead of time.
