Title: Roving Conservation Corps Crew Member

Camp Dodge in Gorham, NH
Noble View Outdoor Center in Russell, MA

Job Dates: May 24th, 2021 – October 29th, 2021

Hiring Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, starting in January. Interviews are held beginning in February.

Summary Description:

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America’s Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Members of the this 5-person trail crew will be working on a variety of projects including building new trail and rehabilitating existing trail projects across the northeast. Crew members will be placed at a primary work location and will have the potential opportunity to move to another project during the field season. Some Crew members may need to end their season in late August, while others may have the ability to continue working with the crew through the fall.

Housing is provided for days-on and days-off. All Food, tools and group camping equipment are also provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform trail maintenance in effort to protect the natural environment
  • Perform heavy reconstructive trail work including but not limited to: trail relocation, tread hardening, rock construction (waterbars and staircases), timber structures (bog bridges and waterbars), and new trail construction
  • Report trail conditions to the Trails Supervisor
  • Perform trail maintenance in various and sometimes adverse weather conditions
  • Assist with backcountry camp chores; cooking, cleaning, proper food storage, etc.
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment to the highest safety standards in both front country and back country settings
  • Function well as a member of a tightly knit work crew
  • Work in a professional and respectful manner with all other parts of the AMC
  • Represent and support the efforts of the AMC in a professional and supportive manner to the public and cooperating agencies

Qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old by start date, no exceptions
  • Ability and desire to live and work outdoors in the front country or backcountry for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work under varying conditions
  • Ability to carry heavy loads (50+ lbs.) for long distances over rugged terrain
  • Commitment to backcountry stewardship and Leave No Trace ethics
  • Commitment to professionalism
  • Good judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Must have safe driving record and practices, subject to verification through a driver's license history check

  • Commitment to resource and trail protection efforts
  • Trail Work experience and knowledge
  • Hand- and power-tool training and familiarity
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or higher
